Event Details

Community Relations is one of nine courses within the RaD Management Program offered by UDI Capital Region. This course is designed to provide participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively create and manage community relations plans for real estate development projects. Led by experienced instructors, this course covers a wide range of strategies and techniques for community engagement.


Participants will learn the importance of community engagement in the development process and gain insights into effective strategies for fostering positive relationships with the local community. They will explore techniques for planning and conducting successful community meetings, utilizing online communication platforms, and managing the reputation of the project.


The course also emphasizes the importance of building and maintaining community support throughout the development process. Participants will learn how to effectively communicate with community members, address their concerns, and develop strategies to gain their trust and buy-in.


Moreover, the course covers the preparation for public hearings, including understanding the regulatory and legal aspects, as well as techniques for presenting the project and responding to community feedback.


By completing Community Relations, participants will possess the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the complexities of community relations in real estate development. This course equips learners with effective community engagement strategies, reputation management techniques, and the ability to build and maintain community support. With guidance from experienced instructors, participants will be well-prepared to manage community relations and foster positive relationships throughout the development process.


Three 2-hour modules, held once a week online for three weeks

    Mary is an experienced commercial real estate professional who has worked in development management and community relations for over 30 years on projects throughout the Province of B.C. She currently provides consulting services for a range of land-owner clients, working with project planning teams to create and implement engagement plans that support the approvals process.
    Mary’s background includes a Bachelors in Commerce (Urban Land Economics) from Sauder School/UBC, a strategic planning-focused MBA through SFU and a strong track record for approvals in industrial, commercial, retail and residential development applications - on behalf of government and private sector clients.
    Mary spent the first half of her career in her hometown of Vancouver and, for the past 17 years, has built her own consulting business in Kelowna where she also shares an active life with her husband, teenage son, family pets and many friends.
