MAPLE

MAPLE by Southwest Properties stands as a contemporary landmark in Halifax, offering the largest residential building downtown. This award-winning development, recognized as the 2018 Rental Development of the Year by the Canadian Federation of Apartment Associations and the recipient of the Excellence in Green Building - New Construction award by the Canada Green Building Council's Atlantic Chapter, achieved LEED® Silver status in 2022.

Designed with the young urbanite, professionals, and downsizers in mind, MAPLE features 300 elegantly designed living spaces by Norman Flynn Design, ranging from studios to three-bedroom units with dens. Each suite offers spacious living areas, modern kitchens with stainless steel appliances, and large windows with city or harbor views. Residents enjoy a vibrant urban lifestyle with 24-hour concierge service, contactless delivery systems, and amenities like an indoor pool, fitness center, and social rooms, all within a pet-friendly environment.

Centennial Building

The Centennial Building, a mid-century high-rise constructed in the 1970s, was once a landmark in downtown Halifax. Standing 14 storeys tall, it was one of the city's first high-rise structures. However, by the time Sidewalk Real Estate acquired it, the building was nearly 40 percent vacant, with many tenants having migrated to newer A-class properties. Recognizing its potential, Sidewalk focused on the building's core strengths, such as its sturdy concrete columns and impressive ceiling heights ranging from 11.5 to 16.5 feet, opting for retention and adaptation over demolition.

The revitalized property, now set to become the Agency Art Lofts, will be a mixed-use building that blends historic preservation with modern amenities. The project will include exposed concrete surfaces, exceptional floor-to-floor heights, and stunning waterfront views. Five newly-modernized elevators will serve the building's two internal towers, while the podium, redesigned by the award-winning Fathom Studios, will showcase original art throughout, ensuring that the Centennial Building remains a vibrant and integral part of Halifax's architectural heritage.

Cunard Residences

Cunard Residences, developed by Southwest Properties, is an exceptional residential building that blends sustainability, comfort, and convenience. Aiming for LEED® Gold certification, the development embodies smart growth strategies and green building practices, ensuring a sustainable and livable environment for its residents.

The building is constructed with high-quality materials and incorporates energy-efficient features such as energy modeling, energy recovery ventilators, and individual unit utility metering. These innovations not only benefit the environment but also allow residents to manage and control their utility consumption, enhancing their overall comfort and cost-efficiency.

Ideally located on the Halifax waterfront, Cunard Residences offers a prime location for both work and leisure. With numerous shops and services within walking distance, residents can enjoy a car-free lifestyle. The property further promotes green living with on-site EV chargers and ample bicycle storage in the interior parkade, making it easy for residents to choose sustainable transportation options.

The Press Block

The Press Block is nine stories at its tallest height with six high-end townhouses and 132 distinguished suites, along with commercial spaces on the Barrington street level. The design approach was conceived by acclaimed architects, interpreters, planners and urban developers who are deeply rooted in the community. Their vision is for the conservation of heritage elements to be both compatible and discernable from the new, contemporary pieces. Harmony triumphs as an unparalleled visual narrative in the state of an architectural masterpiece.

The view from Barrington south showcases its metropolitan side, with an 11' tall window wall framing the lobby, accented with soft lighting and clean, recessed lines. Maintaining much of the existing stone and masonry, stylized cast iron and copper cladding, windows and sills for the remaining portions defines the building's character. Given the dynamic nature of the site, archival photographs were used to reference source materials and ensure the fabric of its heritage is retained. These intentions set a precedent in Halifax for preserving coveted features, which are unique to the city's distinct architecture.

The Press Block celebrates its history while adding richness and vibrance to the downtown core. Relayed best by the architects themselves: "As a whole, the design reflects the past, present and future of this significant urban site."

The Cogswell District

The Cogswell District in Halifax, Nova Scotia, is a transformative urban redevelopment project aimed at revitalizing a significant part of the city's downtown core. This ambitious initiative seeks to replace the outdated Cogswell Interchange, a remnant of 1960s urban planning, with a vibrant, mixed-use community that seamlessly connects neighborhoods and enhances public spaces.

Spanning approximately 22 acres, the Cogswell District is designed to be a model of sustainable urban living. It will feature a blend of residential, commercial, and institutional spaces, along with green areas, parks, and public squares. The development emphasizes walkability, with wide sidewalks, bike lanes, and improved public transit access, encouraging a car-free lifestyle.

A key aspect of the project is its commitment to environmental sustainability. The Cogswell District will incorporate green building practices, energy-efficient infrastructure, and stormwater management systems to reduce its environmental footprint. Additionally, the project aims to reflect Halifax's rich cultural heritage, integrating public art, historical landmarks, and Indigenous storytelling into the urban fabric.

The Cogswell District is set to become a dynamic and inclusive community, fostering economic growth, enhancing quality of life, and reshaping Halifax's urban landscape for future generations.
