Event Details

Technical Studies is one of nine courses within the RaD Management Program offered by UDI Capital Region. This course provides participants with a good understanding of the various consultants involved in the real estate development process and their role in signing off on projects. Led by industry leaders, this course covers a wide range of lenses through which the approval process is examined, including Geotechnics, Arboriculture, Heritage Consultation, Archaeology, Transportation, Architecture, Civil Engineering, and more!


Participants will gain insights into the importance of engaging consultants in these specialized fields to ensure compliance with regulations and best practices. They will learn about the specific requirements and considerations associated with each area of study.


Throughout the course, participants will explore strategies for effectively collaborating with consultants, managing their input, and integrating their recommendations into the development process. They will also gain an understanding of the potential challenges and opportunities that arise when working with multiple consultants.


By completing Technical Studies, participants will gain new knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the complex landscape of technical consultants in real estate development. This course equips learners to understand and address the requirements of various disciplines, ensuring a comprehensive and compliant approach to project approval.

    Adam Wharram is an Archaeologist and Team Lead at Stantec Consulting Ltd., a Canadian engineering and design firm stretching to 400 locations across 6 continents, and with 150 employees in two offices in the Greater Victoria area offering services within multiple business sectors including Environmental Services (including Archaeology), Engineering, Transportation Services, and Architecture to name a few.
    Adam graduated from the University of Victoria’s Department of Anthropology in 2011 and has been with Stantec for over 10 years conducting a variety of studies across British Columbia. These studies have included surveys, excavations, and construction monitoring for residential properties, municipal projects on Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland, as well as mining and oil and gas projects throughout the province. Outside of Stantec, Adam held a temporary post at the Archaeology Branch of BC, 2011, and participated in a variety of archaeological projects through UVic and Camosun College including faunal analysis in China, inter-tidal excavation in the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve, and burial cairn survey in Victoria.

After completing her Bachelors of Science in Ecology from the University of Guelph, Shannon moved to Victoria in 2019 to work as a climbing arborist. Transitioning to a consulting arborist role in 2021, Shannon works with private land developers and local municipalities on various urban development projects. Her role includes designing and implementing tree protection strategies to ensure compliance with local bylaws to retain and enhance the urban forest.

She is an active researcher and writer, working throughout the province, conducting assessments of sites to facilitate informed decision-making, including Heritage Values Assessments, Statements of Significance and Heritage Conservation Plans. She has authored and co-authored a number of academic papers, books, book chapters and consultancy studies on topics related to heritage conservation including adaptive reuse, area conservation planning, the Historic Urban Landscape approach, interpretation, policy studies and recommendations on best practice for official Government use. She is a Professional Member of the Canadian Association of Heritage Professionals (CAHP), accredited for the Education, History and Planning specializations. She is also a Professional Member of The Hong Kong Institute of Architectural Conservationists (HKICON) and a former BCAHP Board Member (2018-2023) and BCAHP Vice President (2019-2023).
